The name of this magnificent palace comes from the 9000 diamond-fashioned stones on the façade of the building. The palace accommodates a number of museums under its roof. Among the most impressive are the National Picture Gallery (Pinacoteca Nazionale) and the Civic Gallery of Modern Art.

Museo del Duomo is definitely a must-see when in town. It houses spectacular works by the famous local 15th century artist - Cosme Tura. Among the other points of interest in the museum is the remarkable regal Madonna with the Christ child, depicted with a pomegranate in one hand, a work of Jacopo della Quercia.

The Duomo is situated within a short walk from the Este Castle. It dates back to the 12th century and architecturally is a fine blend of subtle gothic and Romanesque styles. The cathedral boasts a stunning triple façade with a splendid portal. The doorway is decorated with a lovely stone Last Judgement fashioned in French-gothic style. The lunette above the door represents a sculpture of St. George.

Casa Romei is a 15th century palazzo, a former home of Giovanni Romei, a close friend and trustee of Duke Borso D'Este. The property is set close to the tomb of Este. Romei married one of Este princesses; however, there are no evidences if this marriage was a love-match or a money-match.

Salon of Games (Salone dei Giochi), the Salon of Dawn (Salone dell'Aurora). The Este Castle is a magnificent four-towered fortress, illuminated at night, dating back to the 14th century. The property has had many facelifts during the centuries and was the residence of the influential Este family.

Civic Museum of Ancient Art

The Civic Museum of Ancient Art is housed in the 14th century Schifanoia Palace, which was originally built for Albert V D'Este. During the 15th century, the property was extended under the command of Borso D'Este. The museum, which is set presently within the castle, was originally established in 1758 and moved here more than a century after in 1898.
